What is Magnesium Nitride

What is Magnesium-Nitride?

Magnesium nitride is an inorganic compound having the chemical formula Mg3N2. It's part the Cubic Crystal System. At the temperature of room, pure magnesium nutridide is a bright yellow-green color however, magnesium nitride that contains some magnesium oxide particles is grayish white.

The Molar mass of magnesium nitride is 100.95g/mol. Its density 2.712g/cm3. Magnesium nitride dissolves completely in water and acid but is partially dissolvable when mixed with ether and ethanol.

The melting temperature of magnesium is 1500 degrees. Magnesium Nitride, as with many metal nitrides reacts with water to produce ammonia. It is often used as a catalyst. React with acid and aqueous nonmetallic oxides , forming ammonium salts as well as magnesium salts.

Magnesium Nitride is a form of ceramic in nature. Magnesium nitride is highly resistant to corrosion resistance and greatly increases productivity. Magnesium is also a great material for thermal conductivity as well with high corrosion resistance and resistance to temperature. Magnesium nitride also has a great significance due to its use as a catalyst during the synthesis of boron nitrogen.

What is Magnesium Nitride used for?

1. It is used as a catalyst to make the nitride out of other elements that have high hardness and thermal conductivity. It is also a good choice for corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and extremely high resistance to temperature. The first successful chemical synthesis of cubic-boron nitride one catalyst involved was magnesium Nitride.

2. This is a high strength steel and smelting additives. Magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2) is a substitute for the magnesium that has been desulphurized for construction the smelting process, and helps to increase the density, strength as well as the bearing force of steel. In addition, using of magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2) desulfurizationcould reduce the use of other additives, thus helping to lower the cost of manufacturing construction steel.

3. For the preparation of special ceramic materials;

4. For the manufacturing of a specific alloy foaming agent

5. Special glass for manufacturing;

6. For crosslinking catalytically produced polymers

7. To reuse nuclear waste

How to Produce Magnesium Nitride?

At present, the principal preparation methods of magnesium nitride comprises direct reaction method for magnesium powder using nitrogen, method of reaction of magnesium with nitrogen in nitrogen plasma flow as well as the method for the explosion of magnesium coils in nitrogen atmosphere the low pressure chemical gas technique, self-propagating high temperature synthesis technique, the synthesis of nano magnesium for example.

Recently, G. Soto et al. prepared amorphous magnesium nitride films with different Mg:N ratios on Si substrates in a molecular nitrogen environment by Deposition using pulses of laser. These techniques restrict the production of industrial magnesium nitride due to costs, lengthy processes or complex equipment operation or the poor yield of magnesium nitride.

Although the direct reaction of magnesium powder with nitrogen is of economic value, the production of magnesium powder requires greater reaction temperatures and a longer reaction time. Furthermore, the form of the particles isn't perfect and easy to form agglomerates, which doesn't meet demands of industrial-grade quality. N3 can be broken into N- which is a broken bond more easily than N2, and the decomposed H2 can interfere with the formation process of MgO. Therefore, ammonia gas could be used as the nitrogen source. Chen Faqin et al. Utilizing liquid ammonia as the nitrogen source to make magnesium nitride via direct Nitriding of magnesium powder. The following conclusions could be drawn: Based on thermodynamic analysis, liquid ammonia can react to magnesium powder more efficiently than nitrogen for the production of magnesium nitride. Premium magnesium nitride with an extremely high purity and uniform particles can be made at 600 and ammonia atmosphere for 1hand then heated to 800, ammonia flow rate 500ml/min and Nitriding time of 1h.
